PSE&G FUNDS "GREEN" SCHOLARSHIP
The New Jersey Association of Counties today announced a new “green” scholarship program on which it has been joined by Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G) and the New Jersey Council of County Vocational-Technical Schools.
“We are very fortunate to have as our partners two organizations that share our commitment to education and to new environmental technologies,” said Celeste Carpiano, the NJAC executive director.
The new program is a variation of an existing scholarship awarded by the NJAC Foundation entitled the Partners in Educational Excellence Scholarship. Under the new program, called the Partners in Educational Excellence Green Scholarship, students from county vocational schools will be chosen to receive a scholarship that can be used at any state or county college to study environmental sciences. Students who enter a trade without attending college will receive a stipend instead that they can use to purchase tools and supplies for their first jobs.
“PSE&G is proud of its long partnership with NJAC,” said Art S. Guida, the company’s Director of External Affairs. “This year, through our support for a unique program to provide ‘green’ scholarships, we are working together to prepare New Jersey’s students for tomorrow’s jobs in the energy field and address today’s public policy challenges.”
According to Carpiano, every one of New Jersey’s 21 county governments is moving toward alternative fuel vehicles, solar power, high-efficiency heating and cooling systems and even their own energy production. That means that the scholarship program benefits not only the students who participate, but their future employers as well.
“This program is intended to help the students. But it is also designed to create a pool of qualified employees from which counties can draw in future years,” said Carpiano.
Criteria for selecting scholarship recipients will be developed by the individual vocational schools.
Frank Gargiulo, president of the New Jersey Council of County Vocational-Technical Schools, said the program will provide opportunities for students to study renewable energy, energy efficiency, and other areas that support a greener, cleaner environment.
"PSEG is leading the green energy revolution in New Jersey, and we are grateful for its commitment to helping our schools and students prepare for the green-collar jobs of today and tomorrow,” Gargiulo said.
