NJAC LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

On February 18, 2010, the Senate State Government, Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee approved several bills that would reform the state’s public employee retirement and benefits programs. NJAC testified in support of the measures, which is expected to pass the full Senate today, February 22, 2010.

Senate Bill 2 (Scutari/O’Toole) proposes to change eligibility requirements for participation in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) and the Teachers Pension and Annuity Fund (TPAF). Senate Bill 3 (Doherty/Whelan) would require all public employees enrolled in the State Health Benefits Plan to pay a portion of the premium. And Senate Bill 3 (O’Toole/Buono) would impose a cap on the amount that can be paid to retiring public employees for their unused sick days.
